Choosing the automation type
To create a complete document processing solution, models developed in both classic and modern experiences must be integrated into document processing automation. Automation is a process that manages the logic of automatically gathering documents from different sources, implementing the processing logic, such as digitization, classification, extraction, and validation, along with the business logic. You can use UiPath® Document UnderstandingTM to build automations that perform these functions using:
- Robotic process automation (RPA) activities in Studio or Studio Web
- APIs using Document Understanding cloud APIs
For an in-depth comparison between automation types, visit Automations in Document Understanding™.
- IntelligentOCR activities
- DocumentUnderstanding activities
Both sets of activities allow you to use a comprehensive document processing framework, which includes taxonomy definition, digitization, document classification, data extraction, and data validation. However, the activities differ in their accessible configuration details, ease of use, and compatibility with various features.
In addition, you can also use a set of activities designed to help you interact with PDF files. For more information, check the PDF Activities guide.
You can use API calls as an alternative to the robotic process automation (RPA) approach. API calls allow you to retrieve detailed information about your project, including the extractors and classifiers used. They also enable the use of digitization APIs, data classification and extraction from documents using both specialized and generative models, and validation of previously digitized, classified, and extracted information.
This feature is currently part of an audit process and is not to be considered part of the FedRAMP Authorization until the review is finalized. See here the full list of features currently under review.
For more information on how to use the Document Understanding APIs, check the Document Understanding API Guide.
